Meet Sally Stephens, Ph.D., J.D., Psy.D. | Psychotherapist in Pasadena

Hi, I'm Dr. Sally Stephens.

I'm a clinical psychologist based out of Pasadena, CA. I have worked as a mental health professional for over 30 years, and my diverse experience has allowed me to build a deep sense of compassion and understanding for a wide range of different issues.

I started my career as a marriage and family therapist, which has given me a rich understanding of relationship issues and dynamics. Though I have since completed a doctoral program and earned my license as a clinical psychologist nearly a decade ago, I still bring this training to my current work with clients.

I have also received additional training in psychoanalysis, which allows me to help clients explore their conscious and unconscious thoughts, feelings, desires, and experiences.

In addition to a psychoanalytic and relational lens, I also incorporate elements of other therapeutic modalities, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). I tailor my approach to each client's specific situation, so we'll work together to determine what you need.

Regardless of what interventions we use, my goal is to make sure that you feel seen and supported throughout the entire therapeutic process. I build strong relationships with each of my clients so you can feel comfortable turning inward and expressing your most authentic self. From here, we can make lasting, positive change.

AREAS of FOCUS

Currently, I offer individual therapy to adults of all ages. While I'm based in Pasadena, CA, my virtual services allow me to help adults across the state of California. Here are some of the main issues I can help with.

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Bipolar disorder

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

  • Trauma, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

I also specialize in helping people who identify as "high-functioning" or "high-achieving." These individuals are often outwardly successful but struggle to manage stress and create meaningful relationships. Together, we can gain insight into your challenges and help you find connection in your day-to-day-life.

For some people, cost can be a barrier in getting support. Unfortunately, I'm unable to offer no-cost therapy. For information about other local mental health services, visit the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health resource page here.

You need a higher level of care.

I provide services to high-functioning adults in Pasadena, California and throughout the entire state. However, if your symptoms are more severe, you might need more intensive support.

FAQs about therapy in Pasadena

  • It's common for people to second-guess themselves when considering therapy. I see this especially with the high achievers I work with. They present as "having it all together" when they're struggling internally.

If you are interested in therapy, I highly encourage you to try it. You don't need to wait until things are "bad enough" to get support. Working with a therapist can help you build insight, learning new coping skills, manage anxiety and depression, and shift unhealthy behaviors even if your symptoms are mild.

  • There are many different types of psychotherapists. In your search for a clinician, you might see therapists with the following credentials:

Licensed marriage and family therapist (as well as family therapist associate or associate marriage and family therapist)

Licensed clinical social worker (as well as associate clinical social worker)

Licensed professional clinical counselor (as well as associate professional clinical counselor)

These mental health professionals typically have a masters degree in their field along with thousands of hours of supervised practice. On the other hand, psychologists have a doctorate degree in psychology. Some psychologists may work exclusively in research, while some provide therapy and/or psychological evaluations.

All of these clinicians are qualified to provide therapy, so it's up to you to choose which therapist is right for you.

Please note that these professionals listed above are different from al life coach or career coach.

  • When choosing a therapist, it's important to make sure that they work with the kind of issues you're experiencing. For example, if you have PTSD, search specifically for clinicians who provide trauma therapy.

You'll also want to consider logistics. Is the therapist licensed to practice in the state where you live? Do they provide in-person or online therapy (whichever you prefer)? Are you comfortable with their rates?

Most of all, it's important to make sure you connect with a prospective therapist. The therapeutic relationship is an essential part of the process, so I recommend scheduling a consultation to see whether or not you're the right fit for each other.
